Tawakkul ʿala Allah
Definition
Tawakkul ʿala Allah is the practical, lived expression of tawhid — the daily act of trusting God with one's affairs, needs, and outcomes. Al-Ghazali is precise about what this means: it is not the rejection of effort or the abandonment of legitimate means, but rather the inner conviction — held while making full effort — that the outcome is in God's hands alone. He identifies three levels of tawakkul: the intellectual level (knowing one should trust God), the emotional level (actually feeling that rest in God), and the level of the siddiqin — an unshakeable, bone-deep certainty that God is the only real agent, producing absolute peace regardless of circumstances.
