Tawḥīd
Definition
Tawhid is the foundational declaration of Islam — 'there is no god but God' — but al-Ghazali shows that its full meaning extends far beyond a theological statement into a complete spiritual transformation of the heart. At the surface level, tawhid means the rejection of false deities. At a deeper level, it means the recognition that God alone has real being, real power, and real agency — that everything else exists only through His sustaining will. At the deepest level, it is the lived experience in which the heart has been so emptied of attachment to anything other than God that only God remains as the object of one's love, fear, hope, and trust. This deepest tawhid is what the entire Ihya is ultimately in service of.
