Ta'wil al-Ahadith
Definition
Ta'wil al-ahadith — interpretation of dreams — is the divinely granted knowledge that Allah gave to Yusuf and that became the mechanism of his entire rise from prison to power. He interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners correctly; one of them, restored to service in the royal court, mentioned Yusuf years later when the Pharaoh had a dream that none of his advisors could interpret. Ibn Kathir notes the theological point: ta'wil al-ahadith is presented in the Quran as a gift from Allah ('He will teach you the interpretation of events'), not a human skill or learned technique. The knowledge came from God, was used in God's service, and produced an outcome that only God could have foreseen.
