Uns

Uns — intimacy or spiritual companionship — is the state in which the servant feels a genuine nearness and familiarity in their relationship with God, such that worship, remembrance, and prayer feel not like obligations but like beloved conversations with a presence that is genuinely felt. Al-Ghazali describes uns as the reward of consistent spiritual practice: those who persist in dhikr, in prayer, in reflection, gradually find that the relationship with God takes on a warmth and a comfort that makes every other company feel pale by comparison. The one who has tasted uns finds solitude with God to be the most desired state of all, and the loss of that intimacy — through sin, heedlessness, or distraction — is felt as the most acute deprivation.
