Yawm al-Qiyama

Definition

Yawm al-Qiyama — the Day of Rising — is the eschatological event that al-Ghazali treats as the most important future reality for the practical spiritual life. It is not the theological completeness of the doctrine that he emphasizes but its emotional and practical impact: on that Day, every secret will be disclosed, every pretense will fall away, every act that was hidden will be revealed, and only what was genuinely real will remain. Al-Ghazali uses the vivid Quranic descriptions of this Day — the disintegration of mountains, the blazing sun brought near, the terror of the divine presence — not to frighten but to awaken the heart to the seriousness of every choice made in this life.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
