Zikr ʿAnd al-Shahwa
The remembrance of Allah in moments of desire — dhikr when appetite arises — is al-Ghazali's most practically immediate prescription for governing the two desires. When hunger or sexual desire arises, the person who turns immediately to dhikr, to the remembrance of Allah's watchfulness, to the recollection of what is permissible and impermissible, is exercising the most direct and most effective form of governance. The heart that is genuinely present to Allah in the moment of desire is far less vulnerable to crossing the boundaries than the heart that is absent from this awareness.
As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
