Ziyāra
Definition
Ziyara is the visit to sacred sites — most importantly the Prophet's ﷺ mosque and grave in Madinah, the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, and the graves of scholars and righteous Muslims throughout the Islamic world. Al-Ghazali defends the legitimacy and spiritual value of ziyara against those who question it, arguing that visiting the graves of the righteous is a practice with deep roots in prophetic tradition: it reminds the living of death, connects them with the spiritual legacy of those who came before, and creates an occasion for supplication in places associated with divine mercy and acceptance.
