From Patience & Gratitude.

"Gratitude, too, has many levels, the highest of which we have discussed, and it encompasses lesser matters. For instance, a servant’s modesty due to Allah's continual gifts is gratitude. Recognizing one’s shortfall in gratitude is gratitude, apologizing for the lack of gratitude is gratitude, knowing the magnitude of Allah’s forbearance and concealment is gratitude, and acknowledging that blessings are from Allah without deserving them is gratitude."
— Imam al-Ghazali, Book 32: Patience and Gratitude
-
"Patience in obedience is essentially an expression of gratitude. Gratitude involves using Allah's blessings wisely, while patience is about maintaining religious motivation against the pull of desire. Thus, patience and gratitude are two sides of the same coin, viewed from different angles. When religious motivation resists desire, it is called patience."
— Imam al-Ghazali, Book 32: Patience and Gratitude
-
"Many associate gratitude with simply praising Allah and avoiding sin, rather than using blessings for obedience. Therefore, patience is often seen as superior to gratitude because the common understanding of patience is deeper than that of gratitude. Junayd, may Allah have mercy on him, was once asked which is better: patience or gratitude."
— Imam al-Ghazali, Book 32: Patience and Gratitude
