What is Book 35 of the Iḥyāʾ?
The Book of Divine Unity and Trust in God is Book 35 of Imam al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, the fifth book of the fourth quarter, The Saving Virtues. Al-Ghazālī wrote the Iḥyāʾ in the 11th–12th century. This book joins two ideas that he treats together: tawhid, the affirmation that God is one, and tawakkul, trust in God. Its question is practical. If a person truly believes that nothing exists or is provided for except by God, how should that belief change the way they rely on created means and intermediaries?
After the opening, the chapters turn to reliance in practice. One gathers what the Shaykhs have said about the states of reliance. Another describes the actions of those who rely on God. A third deals with reliance on Allah for provision, the daily question of livelihood. The last chapter is unusually concrete: the etiquette of the one who relies on God when his possessions are stolen. Throughout, the standard is the phrase quoted in the opening, 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and what an excellent guardian He is.'
The book opens by praising God, who raised the sky without pillars and provides for His servants, and who guides those with hearts away from intermediaries and directly to Him. Al-Ghazālī then states his theme plainly: reliance on God is a station of the religion and one of the highest ranks of those nearest to Him, profound as knowledge and hard as practice. The reader is asked to hold both halves at once: to believe that every atom is created and every creature provided for by God, and then to live as if that were true.
