What is Book 8 of the Iḥyāʾ?
The Mysteries of Qur'an Recitation, or the Book of the Etiquette of Quran Recitation, is Book 8 of Imam al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, in the first quarter, the Acts of Worship. Al-Ghazālī wrote the Iḥyāʾ in the 11th–12th century. The book answers a question for anyone who reads the Qur'an regularly: how do I recite so that the words reach me? It sets out the outward rules of recitation and then the inward states, so that recitation stops being mere words and becomes a direct encounter with the Divine.
The audiobook has four chapters. Chapter 1 is on the virtue of the Quran and its people. Chapter 2 gives the external manners of recitation, the outward rules. Chapter 3 moves to the inward acts during recitation, the states of the heart while the tongue moves. Chapter 4 is on understanding the Quran and its interpretation, how to reflect on what is recited rather than pass over it. Outward, inward, then understanding: that is the order of the book.
It opens with praise of Allah for His Prophet ﷺ and His revealed Book, a revelation that falsehood cannot approach. Al-Ghazālī describes the Qur'an as a light and a healing for hearts, Allah's firm rope and strong handle, whose wonders never cease and whose constant recitation never tires those who recite it. He recalls the jinn who heard it and returned to their people as warners. Whoever adheres to it is guided, he says, and whoever acts upon it succeeds. The listener is asked to approach the Qur'an as that kind of Book before learning the manners of reciting it.
