About this work

What is Book 9 of the Iḥyāʾ?

The Mysteries of Supplication, or the Book of Remembrance and Supplications, is Book 9 of Imam al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, in the first quarter, the Acts of Worship. Al-Ghazālī wrote the Iḥyāʾ in the 11th–12th century. The book answers a question about the hours between the prayers: how should a Muslim remember Allah and ask of Him through the day? It is a complete guide to dhikr and du'a, covering the daily litanies, the etiquettes of supplication, and the spiritual states that make remembrance the foundation of a peaceful life.

The audiobook has five chapters. Chapter 1 sets out the virtue of remembrance and its benefit. Chapter 2 gives the etiquette of supplication and its virtue: how to ask well. Chapter 3 collects accepted supplications for the morning, the evening and after prayer, the daily litanies. Chapter 4 gathers supplications passed down from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions. Chapter 5 gives transmitted supplications for each occasion. The first two chapters teach; the last three are a working collection the listener can return to day after day.

It opens with praise of Allah, whose mercy is universal and who rewards His servants for remembering Him by remembering them: "So remember Me; I will remember you." Al-Ghazālī quotes the invitation "Call upon Me; I will respond to you," and the promise "Indeed, I am near," offered to the obedient and the sinner alike. Then he states the claim of the book: after reciting the Book of Allah, no act of worship of the tongue surpasses remembrance and sincere supplication. The listener is asked to take that seriously and to make the tongue busy with it.
