The Beginning of Guidance

Imam al-Ghazālī's practical handbook for the sincere seeker — a companion to the Ihyāʾ that maps the believer's whole day, from waking to sleep, across three movements: acts of obedience, turning away from sin, and the etiquette of companionship with God and people. A short, transformative primer on turning knowledge into a lived path.

Bidāyat al-Hidāyah — The Beginning of Guidance — by Imam al-Ghazālī is available as a complete English audiobook on Joyful Muslims, about two hours, translated from the Arabic with a word-synced bilingual transcript. It is al-Ghazālī's short, practical handbook for the sincere seeker: the believer's whole day, from waking to sleep, in three movements — acts of obedience, turning away from sin, and the etiquette of companionship with God and with people.

Narrated in English from the original Arabic manuscripts. About Imam al-Ghazali →

About this work

What is The Beginning of Guidance?

The Beginning of Guidance is the companion al-Ghazālī (1058–1111 CE / 450–505 AH) wrote for readers who wanted the Iḥyāʾ turned into a day they could actually live. Where the Iḥyāʾ explains, this book instructs: what to do on waking, how to make wuḍūʾ and ghusl, how to go to the mosque and enter it, how to pray and how to lead or follow, and how to sleep — each with its etiquette.

It is built in three parts. Part One is obedience: the etiquettes of daily worship and devotion, hour by hour. Part Two is turning away from sin — the sins of the limbs and the sins of the heart. Part Three is the etiquette of companionship: how to be with God, and how to be with people. Thirty-one short chapters in about two hours.

It opens, as al-Ghazālī's books do, with praise of Allah and blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and then a plain question to the reader: what is your intention in seeking knowledge?

Is there an English audiobook of The Beginning of Guidance?

Yes. Joyful Muslims publishes the complete Bidāyat al-Hidāyah as an English audiobook (about two hours, thirty-one chapters), translated from the Arabic, with a word-synced bilingual transcript.

How is it different from the Iḥyāʾ?

The Iḥyāʾ is forty books that explain the religion from the inside; The Beginning of Guidance is one short book that tells you what to do with your day. Many readers take it as the door into the Iḥyāʾ.

Is it free to listen?

The whole library is open to everyone. Every member gets five hours of listening free each month; Joyful+ removes the time limit.
