What did al-Ghazali say about the secrets of prayer?
Al-Ghazali's Kitāb Asrār al-Ṣalāh in the Iḥyāʾ is a master class in the inner life of prayer — presence, shame, hope, love, and the heart's continuous turn toward Allah.
10 passages from 6 books in the library
Al-Ghazali taught that prayer is the heart's continuous turn toward Allah, citing the command "Establish prayer for My remembrance" to show that prayer should counter forgetfulness. In his Book of Prayer within the Iḥyāʾ, he noted that someone praying who misses answering the call to prayer may respond after finishing, and that performing two units of prayer after ablution is recommended, since ablution is itself an act of devotion intended for prayer.
