Hawā al-Nafs
هوى النفسThe desires of the lower self — the pull of the nafs toward comfort, pleasure, ease, and the path of least resistance. Ibn al-Qayyim identifies hawā al-nafs as the primary vehicle through which Shaytan operates: he rarely commands evil directly but works by making the easier, pleasurable path seem reasonable, then natural, then necessary. Following hawā is the root cause of spiritual disease, because it consistently steers the heart away from what Allah loves toward what the self prefers. The entire spiritual discipline Islam prescribes — fasting, prayer, voluntary acts of worship, resisting comfort — is designed to weaken hawā's authority over the heart and restore rational, revelation-guided decision-making.
As understood in the classical tradition of Ibn al-Qayyim and the scholars of his school.
