About this work

What is The Disease and The Cure?

The Disease and The Cure, Al-Da' wal-Dawa', is a work by Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, the 14th-century scholar also known for Madārij al-Sālikīn and his many writings on the soul, love, the traps of the ego, and the nature of the heart. Its fuller title is The Sufficient Answer for the One Who Asks About the Healing Remedy. The book began as a reply to a question: a man was afflicted by a calamity that threatened his worldly life and his hereafter, and despite his efforts he could not rid himself of it. What is the cure? Ibn al-Qayyim's answer became a whole book on the diseases of the heart.

The book is a diagnosis of the diseases of the heart and their cures through repentance, remembrance, and spiritual discipline. It urges the soul to avoid sins and to repent sincerely. One ailment gets special attention: the disease of passion, which the introduction calls distinct in its nature, causes, and treatment from other diseases, and hard to cure once it takes root. Ibn al-Qayyim does not rely on Greek wisdom but on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, which he treats as the sources of guidance, admonition, and healing for what is in the hearts.
