What is Al-Shamā'il al-Muhammadiyya?
Al-Shamā'il al-Muhammadiyya is a collection compiled by Abu Isa Muhammad Ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi, Imam al-Tirmidhi, who passed away in the year 279 AH. It focuses on the noble characteristics and attributes of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: his physical appearance, his moral conduct, and the way he dealt with others. The question it answers is simple and personal: what was the Prophet ﷺ like? Al-Tirmidhi answers not with his own description but with the words of the Companions who saw him, gathered hadith by hadith. The book aims to inspire love for the Prophet ﷺ by showing his qualities, and to invite the reader to follow them.
The collection covers the Prophet's ﷺ appearance, character, manners, worship, and daily life. Its structure moves through these aspects one by one, which makes it accessible to scholars and ordinary readers alike. The first descriptions come from the Companions themselves. One remembers the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a man of medium stature, with broad shoulders and thick hair that reached the lobes of his ears, wearing a red cloak, and says he never saw anything more beautiful than him. The book is a way of connecting with the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ and deepening reverence and devotion to him.
