Who were Hud and Salih?
Hud, Salih & the Destroyed Nations is the fourth book in Stories of the Prophets (Qisas al-Anbiya) by Imam Ibn Kathīr, the 14th-century scholar who wrote the history Al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah and a commentary on the Qurʾan. Its own heading is 'the story of Hud, Salih, and the people of al-Ras.' The book answers what the Qurʾan and authentic traditions say about the prophets who came after Nuh, peace be upon them all, and about the nations that rejected them and were destroyed.
The book begins where the story of Nuh ends, with Nuh's will to his son: two things commanded and two forbidden. He commands 'There is no god but Allah,' which would outweigh the seven heavens and the seven earths, and 'Glory be to Allah and all praise be to Him.' He forbids idolatry and arrogance, and defines arrogance as disdaining the truth and looking down on people. Ibn Kathīr then weighs the claim that Nuh was 600 years old when he boarded the ark, and states that a report that cannot be reconciled with the Qurʾan is incorrect. Then the book turns to Hud, Salih, and the people of al-Ras.
The listener meets Ibn Kathīr's method early. A hadith is given, its source is discussed, whether it goes back to Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As as related by Imam Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī, and the point is closed by leaving the matter to Allah's knowledge.
