Who were Yusha, al-Khidr and Ilyas?
Yusha, al-Khidr & Ilyas is the tenth book in Stories of the Prophets (Qisas al-Anbiya) by Imam Ibn Kathīr, the 14th-century scholar known for the history Al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah and his commentary on the Qurʾan. It answers what came after Musa, peace be upon him. Who led the Children of Israel next? Who was the servant who travelled with Musa in the story of al-Khidr? And what do the sources say about Ilyas?
The book begins with the prophethood of Yusha bin Nun, a descendant of Yusuf, son of Yaqub, and his leadership of the Children of Israel after Musa and Aaron. Ibn Kathīr shows that the Qurʾan refers to Yusha without naming him, in the words 'when Musa said to his servant,' and that an authentic report from Ubayy ibn Kab confirms the servant is Yusha bin Nun. The People of the Book accept Yusha as a prophet, except the Samaritans, who acknowledge no prophet after Musa but him. Ibn Kathīr also examines the report that prophethood passed to Yusha at the end of Musa's life, and judges it debatable.
From Yusha the book moves to al-Khidr and then to Ilyas, peace be upon them. As in the rest of the collection, Ibn Kathīr gives the verse, then the hadith, then the reports, and says where a report is doubtful. It is book ten of the collection and follows directly from The Story of Musa. The whole book runs about 64 minutes.
