What is Book 3 of the Iḥyāʾ?
The Book of Purification, also called the Book of the Secrets of Purity, is Book 3 of Imam al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, in the first quarter, the Acts of Worship. Al-Ghazālī wrote the Iḥyāʾ in the 11th–12th century. This book answers a question every worshipper faces: what does it mean to be clean before Allah? It covers the Islamic rules of purification and their spiritual dimensions, from ritual cleanliness of the body to the purification of the heart, and it establishes purity as the foundation on which valid worship stands.
The audiobook has three sections and a few short chapters. The first section deals with purity from impurity. The second covers purification from ritual impurities, with a chapter on the etiquettes of relieving oneself. The third section is about cleaning visible impurities, followed by a chapter on the various parts of the body and a chapter on disliked traits concerning the beard. The book is short, and it stays practical, covering the rules of washing and cleanliness, and it connects the outward act to an inner meaning.
It opens with praise of Allah, who blessed His servants with the gift of cleanliness and prepared their outer selves through the gentle touch of water. Al-Ghazālī quotes the Prophet ﷺ: "Purity is half of faith," and "The key to prayer is purification." He then argues that this cannot refer to the body alone. Purity, he says, has four levels: the outer body from impurities; the limbs from sins; the heart from blameworthy morals; and the inner consciousness from everything other than Allah. That ladder is what the book asks the listener to climb.
