What is Book 33 of the Iḥyāʾ?
Fear and Hope is Book 33 of Imam al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, written in the 11th–12th century, and the third book of the quarter on the Saving Virtues. Hope and fear, the opening says, are like wings that help the close ones reach every praiseworthy station, and like mounts that traverse the difficult path to the Hereafter. Hope leads to the nearness of the Merciful; fear prevents the fires of hell. The question the book answers is what each of these really is, why each is a virtue, and how to balance them.
The book has two parts, the first on hope and the second on fear. On hope it explains the true nature of hope, which consists of state, knowledge and action, and the remedy of hope and the means by which the state of hope is achieved. On fear it covers the types of fear in relation to what is feared, the virtue of fear and the encouragement towards it, and the meaning of an evil end. A final chapter describes the conditions of the companions, the followers and the righteous.
It opens by distinguishing a station from a state: a quality is a station when it is steadfast and a state when it is transient, just as colors can be permanent or fleeting. The reader is asked to understand hope first, and then fear, so that neither is left out of balance. Allah, the opening says, guides creation to His Paradise with both compulsion and kindness, filling the hearts of His friends with hope and deterring those who turn away with fear.
