Al-ʿAzīz

How the scholars invoke Al-ʿAzīz.

1. "city, I met its preacher known as Al Shaybani, who showed me the letter from the commander of the faithful, Caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz. May God be pleased with him, granting his great ancestor the pulpit of this city, a position inherited since that time till now. The document reads as decreed by Abdullah, the commander of the faithful, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, for so-and-so, dated in the year 99, written in his handwriting. 2. "Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, likened himself to a caretaker of an orphan's wealth, abstaining in abundance and consuming within reason when in need. A story is told of Tawus's son, who fabricated a letter to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, leading to a grant of three hundred dinars. Tawus, upon selling an estate, sent the same amount back to Umar, demonstrating the highest degree of piety, even though the ruler was not like Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz."

3. "Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy, and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq when he appointed Umar ibn al-Khattab as his successor. It was also said that Al-Aziz bought Joseph for 20 dinars, or its weight in musk, silk, or silver. Allah knows best. Now regarding the verse, Thus we established Joseph in the land, it means that Allah arranged for Al-Aziz and his wife to treat him kindly and care for him."
