What is murāqabah (watchfulness)?
Murāqabah is the daylight equivalent of muḥāsabah — the awareness that Allah sees every move in real time. The classical Sufis mapped its levels; Ibn al-Qayyim refined its application.

Murāqabah is the soul's constant awareness that Allah sees every act, so that one preserves one's faith and conduct even in solitude. Al-Ghazali, in the Iḥyāʾ, links it to chivalry — a man's watchfulness over his faith — and to humility, which he says is born of awareness of Allah's majesty. This awareness restrains the natural inclination toward immediate gratification. He warns that some claim spiritual attainment yet never exert themselves in the struggle, self-discipline and watchfulness that murāqabah demands, and ties it to seeking refuge in Allah's forgiveness.
