About this work

Who were the Prophets of Bani Israil?

The Prophets of Bani Israil is the twelfth book in the Stories of the Prophets (Qisas al-Anbiya) by Imam Ibn Kathīr, the 14th-century scholar known for his history Al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah and his commentary on the Qurʾan. This book gathers a group of prophets of the children of Israel whose exact time is not known, except that they came after David and before Zechariah and John, peace be upon them all. It answers a simple question: who were these prophets, and what happened to their people between the age of David and the age of John?

The book opens with Isaiah, son of Amoziah, who according to Muhammad Ibn Ishaq lived before Zechariah and John and foretold both Jesus and Muhammad, peace be upon them. In his time Hezekiah was king over the children of Israel in Jerusalem, and he followed Isaiah's guidance. The king fell ill, and Sanharib, the king of Babylon, marched on Jerusalem with a great army. Ibn Kathīr tells how Hezekiah turned to prayer with a sincere heart. The book also includes Daniel, peace be upon him, among the prophets it covers. Each account is told through the Quran and the reports Ibn Kathīr relies on.
