What is Al-Ghunya, Volume One?
Al-Ghunya li-Ṭālibī Ṭarīq al-Ḥaqq is a manual written by Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani for the believer's outward and inward life. In its introduction, al-Jilani explains that some of his companions urged him persistently to compile the book because of their good opinion of him. The question it answers is a large one: what does a believer need to know and do, both outwardly and inwardly? His answer is comprehensive, covering law, creed, and the spiritual life together. Volume One on Joyful Muslims is the first part of that answer.
Volume One moves through three areas. First, the jurisprudence of worship and daily conduct. Second, the creed of Ahl al-Sunna, the beliefs a Muslim holds. Third, a series of spiritual assemblies on repentance and on the sacred months of Rajab and Sha'ban. The book opens with al-Jilani's own introduction: praise of Allah, with whose praise every book begins, in whose name every ailment is healed and every distress removed, who hears every call in every language and answers the distressed who call on Him.
