What is Book 4 of the Iḥyāʾ?

The Book of Prayer, in full the Book of the Secrets of Salah and Its Essentials, is Book 4 of Imam al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, in the first quarter, the Acts of Worship. Al-Ghazālī wrote the Iḥyāʾ in the 11th–12th century. The book answers a question many Muslims ask quietly: I pray, but how do I make my prayer real? It sets out the conditions and pillars of Salah, then goes past the outward form to its spiritual realities, guiding the believer toward presence of heart and sincerity before Allah.

The audiobook has six chapters, then shorter sections on voluntary prayer. Chapter 1 gives the virtues of Salah, prostration, congregation and the call to prayer. Chapter 2 explains the manner of performing the outward acts of prayer. Chapter 3 turns inward, to the conditions of the heart's actions. Chapter 4 covers leadership in prayer and serving as a role model. Chapter 5 is on the virtue of Friday, its etiquettes, practices and conditions. Chapter 6 gathers matters a seeker commonly meets and needs to know. The closing sections treat supererogatory prayers: those repeated with the days and nights, those repeated each year, and voluntary prayers with incidental causes.

It opens with praise of Allah, who, unlike earthly kings, invites His creation to ask and to supplicate: "Is there any supplicant I may answer, or a seeker of forgiveness that I may forgive?" Al-Ghazālī contrasts this open door with weak kings who need gifts or bribes for a private audience. Then he states his subject plainly: salah is the pillar of the religion, the bond of certainty and the head of acts of devotion. He notes that he has covered the legal details elsewhere, in his works on jurisprudence; here the listener is asked to attend to what happens inside the prayer.
