Ibn Ḥazm of Cordoba wrote this book as a physician writes of a disease he has survived. Blunt, personal and unsparing, it sets out what he learned about the sicknesses of the soul — envy, vanity, the love of being spoken of — and how a person may be cured of them. He names his own faults, tells you what friendship cost him, and refuses every consolation he does not believe. Eleven centuries later it still reads as though written by someone who knows you.

About this work

What is al-Akhlāq wa'l-Siyar?

Ibn Ḥazm of Cordoba (d. 456 AH / 1064 CE) wrote this book the way a physician writes about a disease he has survived. It is a short, unsparing account of the sicknesses of the soul — envy, vanity, the love of being spoken of — and of how a person may actually be cured of them.

What makes the book unforgettable is its honesty. Ibn Ḥazm names his own faults. He tells you what friendship cost him. He refuses every consolation he does not believe. Eleven centuries later, it still reads as though it was written by someone who knows you.
