About this work

What is The Wholesome Rain of Good Words?

The Wholesome Rain of Good Words, Al-Waabil al-Sayyib, is a book by Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, the 14th-century scholar known for Madārij al-Sālikīn and for his writings on the soul, love, the traps of the ego, and the nature of the heart. It is an extended meditation on the remembrance of Allah. The question it answers is what remembrance actually does: what fruits it yields for the heart, the soul, and the life of the believer. Ibn al-Qayyim's answer is that the fruits are extraordinary, and the book sets them out one after another.

It opens with a line that frames everything after it: happiness comes from three, gratitude for blessings, patience in adversity, and repentance from sin. Ibn al-Qayyim explains that the servant is always moving between these three states. Gratitude rests on three pillars: acknowledging the blessing inwardly, expressing it outwardly, and using it in ways that please the One who gave it. Patience means restraining the self from displeasure with what is destined, the tongue from complaint, and the limbs from sin, such as striking the face or tearing clothes. When the servant holds to these, he writes, the trial itself turns into a gift.
