Duʿāʾ before and after eating

The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions to begin a meal with the name of Allah and to end it with praise. These are the supplications for food recorded in the Sunnah, with the Qurʾānic prayer for the good of this world and the next.

Before eating At the start of a meal

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

"In the name of Allah."

After eating Finishing a meal

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍ

"Praise is for Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any power or strength from me."

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

"Our Lord, give us good in this world, and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire."
