al-Baqarah 2:285-286

The last two verses of al-Baqarah

"The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and the believers… Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred."

— al-Baqarah 2:285-286

Context

Given to the Prophet ﷺ on the night of al-Isrāʾ wa al-Miʿrāj. The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever recites them at night, they suffice him.

What the classical scholars said.

Passages from our audiobook library that reference this verse, its theme, or its vocabulary.

  1. "before sleeping, no devil shall approach him. Whoever recites the last two verses of Suratul Baqarah at night, they will suffice him. Whoever says one hundred times in a day, There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner, to him belongs the dominion, and to him is all praise, and he is over all things competent, it will serve as protection from Satan for his whole day."

  2. "The Prophet, peace be upon him, confirmed, He told you the truth, although he is a liar. A similar story is reported to have happened to Abu Ad-Darda and Ubayy ibn Ka'b. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him. This means they protect from harm during the night."

  3. "Ali, may Allah honor his face, used to say, "I do not think a man of sound mind would sleep before reciting the last two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah." He should say twenty-five times, "SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Wallahu Akbar," so that the total of these four phrases reaches a hundred. Now, consider the nature of sleep."
